Today, the vast majority of local newspapers are owned by huge corporations located hundreds of miles from the towns they cover. Pat and Niki Turner wanted to ensure the Herald Times, one of the oldest newspapers in Colorado, would be piloted by a local voice. They are dedicated to ensuring this historical jewel, which will turn 133 in August, is around for decades to come.
They say ink runs in the veins of anyone who’s worked in the publishing world, and for Pat and Niki Turner, the adage is certainly true. The Turners have been in and out of the newspaper business for more than 25 years, and they returned once again last September, coming back to Meeker after a few years away. Their mission: to revive and revitalize the Rio Blanco Herald Times.
In addition to creating a newspaper centered around local news and events, the Turners also publish three magazines a year, allowing Meeker’s businesses and events to expand their reach and help people discover all the greatness this little town has to offer. They are committed to supporting local business and helping out wherever they can. In March, they planned and hosted the first annual St. Patricks Day Dinner & Dance, with all proceeds donated to the Meeker Multiple Sclerosis Fund. They are also working to find funding to provide a scholarship to local students interested in pursuing journalism careers.
You won’t see Meeker-centric news pop up in Facebook’s “Trending” sidebar, but you can count on the Turners and the Rio Blanco Herald Times staff to deliver plenty of local headlines every Thursday.
